So many of us understand that exercise is healthy and good for our well-being, yet many of us are still not reaping the maximum benefit we could from this important activity. As much as we all understand there are huge rewards from exercising there are also serious risks if not done properly. Here are just 3 keys to consider before your next workout so you can ensure that you are getting the most health benefits and working towards a healthy lifestyle.
Key #1 – Breathe When You Exercise
The most important thing you can do as you exercise is breathe deep. So many times I see people involved in an intense workout that are holding their breath. Deep breathing will help your lungs become stronger and larger which is a great step towards building stamina. When you hold your breath you reduce the oxygen flow to your brain and open yourself to possible dizziness and fainting. To be the most effective in your breathing, always remember to breathe in deep into your stomach through your nose, hold it for a few seconds and then exhale hard through your mouth.
Key #2 – Exercise at a Comfortable Level
The second thing you should consider is to make sure that you exercise at a comfortable level. Many of us make the mistake of thinking we can “do it all” when we are first starting out and this can actually have a negative effect on not only our physical health, but let’s face it; if your body hurts or you don’t enjoy exercising you are less likely to stick with it. Don’t be afraid to start off slow and as your exercise regime becomes easier, step it up. If you would like a suggestion for how you can gauge if you are exercising at the right level for your body, you should exercise and still be able to carry on a normal conversation with others around you. Also, don’t be afraid to start with 30 minutes 2-3 times a week and build up to 45 minutes or so each day.
Key #3 – Hydrate and Fuel Your Body
Making sure you are adequately “fueled up” before working out will help you get the most out of your workout. This includes drinking a good supply of water to fully hydrate your body and eating a small healthy and nutritious snack about an hour before your workout. When you do this you will have the energy you require to make it through your workout and it will also go a long way in ensuring that your blood sugar does not bottom out leaving you lightheaded and dizzy. Also remember to always carry a water bottle with you so you can rehydrate your body throughout your workout.
With just a little bit of your time devoted to exercise and more importantly doing it properly, you’ll find yourself healthier than you have ever been in the past.
